The Best Computer Tips and Tricks: Windows Vista

                         Kashmir Soft Care

Advanced Screen Captures with the Snipping Tool

Leave the Prt Scrn key in the 1980s where it belongs. In the Accessories folder on the Start menu, you'll find Vista's Snipping Tool, which lets you capture just the part of the screen you want. Start it up, click and drag the mouse to outline the area you want to preserve, and release the mouse button. After you've snipped, you can draw on the image with a pen tool, highlight or erase certain portions, or save it to a file.

Display Multiple Clocks

If you're a frequent traveler or have friends or family in another time zone, you can set up Vista to display multiple clocks at once. Click on the clock in the Start bar, then click "Change date and time settings"¦," and then the Additional Clocks tab. Check the box next to "Show this clock" for each additional clock you want to add, then specify the time zone and display name for each clock. After you apply your changes by clicking OK, clicking on the clock in the Start bar will show you the clocks for every time zone you've selected.

Improve Program Access with Quick Launch

The Quick Launch toolbar doesn't get a lot of respect, but it's a great way to launch your regular apps faster. If the toolbar isn't visible, right-click on the Start bar, select Toolbars, click on Quick Launch to add it, and then drag programs or shortcuts to it. You can start programs instantly just by clicking or, better yet, use the Windows key. Windows key+1 will open the leftmost program, Windows key+2 the next one, and so on, up to 10 (the 10th opens with Windows key+0).

Windows Mobility Center

Sorry, desktop users, this one's just for the notebook folks. The Windows Mobility Center, which you access by pressing Windows key+X, gives you the opportunity to tweak all sorts of settings on your laptop, all in one convenient place. You can change your display brightness, adjust the volume, check your battery status, turn off wireless connectivity, switch your screen orientation, set up an external display, and more.

Find things now with Instant Search

You don't have to open up a special window to find the files or programs you're looking for. Just hit the Windows key or click the Start button and start typing—Vista will present you organized lists of the top files and programs that match the text you've entered. (If you want to see Vista's full findings, click on the "See all results" link at the bottom of the Instant Search window.)

Change Preinstalled Vista Features

If you don't think you'll ever use preset features like Remote Differential Compression, the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 XPS Viewer, or Windows Meeting Space—or if you really need a simple telnet client—it's easy to remove or add them. Go to the Control Panel, click on "Uninstall a program," and select "Turn Windows features on our off." Then just click on the checkboxes to add elements you need—and lose those you don't.

Maximize Performance

Not sure if your computer is operating at maximum efficiency? Vista can let you know for sure. Just check out the Reliability and Performance Monitor, which you'll find at Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Performance Information and Tools > Advanced Tools > Generate a system health report. Windows will check your disk drives, drivers, services, software and hardware configuration, and more to give you a full accounting of what might be causing you trouble. If it finds a problem, it will explain it to you in detail and suggest how to resolve it.

Burn a CD on Windows XP without using software

Windows XP comes with a builtin CD-copy feature that not many people are aware of. Although almost everyone has his/her favorite CD-copy software to stick with, it is still good to know about this CDR feature from Windows XP. You will find it very useful when you come to another PC that doesn't have a CD-copy software, and you can't just install your favorite software to it. With this feature, you can write some data or MP3 files to a CD/DVD, or erase a re-writable CD/DVD.
If you're using a Re-Writable CD (CD-RW), make sure the disc is blank. You might need to erase (or "format") it before use. For information how to erase a CD-RW on Windows XP without using any other software, see this article.

Requirements: You need to enable the CD-R feature on Windows XP. If you haven't done so, see this article.

  1. Insert a Formated-ReWritable CD or a Recordable (CD-R) disc into the CD drive.
  2. From Desktop, double-click on "My Computer".
  3. Navigate to the files/folders you want to copy to CD. Select them and press "Ctrl-c" to copy.
  4. Browse back to the CD-ROM, and press "Ctrl-V" to paste. The files/folders will show up as temporary files/folders at this time.

     5. On the left panel, select "Write these files to CD".
    6. The window "CD Writing Wizard" appears with the default CD name. Change the CD name if you wish, then click "Next".
     7. The "CD Writing Wizard" starts to write files/folders to the CD:
     8. Once the writing process is complete, the wizard will disappear and the CD-Rom will be ejected.

Increase your RAM and so system speed

1). Start any application, say Word. Open some large documents.

2). Press
CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to open Windows Task Manager and click Processes tab and sort the list in descending order on Mem Usage. You will notice that WINWORD.EXE will be somewhere at the top, using multiple MBs of memory.

3). Now switch to Word and simply minimize it. (Don't use the Minimize All Windows option of the task bar).

4). Now go back to the Windows Task Manager and see where WINWORD.EXE is listed. Most probably you will not find it at the top. You will typically have to scroll to the bottom of the list to find Word. Now check out the amount of RAM it is using. Surprised? The memory utilization has reduced by a huge amount.

5). Minimize each application that you are currently not working on by clicking on the Minimize button & you can increase the amount of available RAM by a substantial margin. Depending upon the number and type of applications you use together, the difference can be as much as 50 percent of extra RAM.
In any multitasking system, minimizing an application means that it won't be utilized by the user right now. Therefore, the OS automatically makes the application use virtual memory & keeps bare minimum amounts of the code in physical RAM.

How to install Windows 7 in the right way

How to get Microsoft's new OS up and running on your rig

Got your hands on Windows 7? Excellent. It's time to install this bad boy. But you want to make sure you're installing it right. Our no-nonsense install guide shows you the right way to install Windows 7 and tells you exactly what you should do the moment your install completes.

1. Back Up Your PC

Before beginning a new OS installation, it’s crucial that you back up your documents and media—after all, we recommend a clean install to minimize cruft and maximize performance. The safest, easiest way to do this is to buy a new hard disk and replace your old one. With speedy 1TB drives around $100, it’s never a bad time to upgrade your storage, and using a clean drive to install your OS means all your files are already backed up; just connect your old hard drive when you’re done and transfer over what you need.
If you’ve updated recently, or don’t want to spend the cash, you’ll want to make sure to back up the files you need to a different partition or physical drive. The most important place to look for files is in your user profile directory, which contains your Documents, Desktop, Pictures, and Application Data folders. We generally recommend backing up the entire C:/Users/<your user name> path. Remember to grab any needed program data or game saves from your Program Files folder, and also make sure to grab any other important directories you’ve created on the disk that are outside these standard paths, such as C:/Download.

2. Start the Installer

Note: If you want to install Windows 7 from a USB key, read our instructions here
Microsoft has made installing Windows 7 simpler than with any previous version of Windows. You just drop the DVD in the tray, and restart your system. At some point during the boot, you’ll be given the option to “Press any key to boot from CD/DVD,” or something along those lines—do so. (If you don’t get this option, go into the BIOS and move the DVD drive ahead of the hard drive in the boot order). Windows will load files from the disk for a moment, then the installer will launch. Select your language preferences, then click Install Now.
Accept the Windows license agreement and choose to do a Custom install. Now, select the system partition you want to install to. (If you’re installing onto a new drive, you may need to create a partition by pressing the New button). If you’re installing over an old partition, it’s a good idea to format it to remove the remnants of the old OS before you install Win7. WARNING: Formatting removes all data from a drive, so make sure you’ve backed up everything. This is the point of no return. That’s all Windows 7 needs to know, so go make yourself a sandwich while your new OS is installed.

3. Finish the Install

Once the install is complete, you’ll be asked for a user name and computer name. We generally recommend using a more creative name than “PC” or “Laptop” for your computer name, to make networking easier. You’ll be given the option to create a password for your account, but you can skip this if you want to. You’ll then be asked for your activation key, although you can skip this step as well—Windows 7 will run for 30 days without a key or activation. Next, you’ll be prompted to choose Windows update settings; we recommend “Use recommended settings.” Set the clock and choose your time zone, and you’re ready to start using your new system.

Post-Install Guide

It's time to get your new OS in order

1. Install Drivers

Windows Update does a pretty good job of automatically downloading and installing the drivers your system needs, but that doesn’t mean you’ll never need to manually download a driver again. We recommend that you start (as always) by installing your motherboard’s chipset/NIC drivers. It’s also worth it to manually install the latest drivers for your videocard. Even though Windows update will most likely find drivers for your GPU, it probably won’t be the most up-to-date version available. Use Windows 7 drivers whenever they’re available, but if they aren’t, we’ve had good luck using Vista drivers on Windows 7.

2. Configure User Account Control Settings

In Vista, one of the first things you had to do with any install was disable UAC to prevent those incessant “Do you really want to install this?” prompts. Fortunately, Microsoft has tweaked the default UAC setting in Windows 7. Now, it strikes an excellent balance of keeping you safe with minimal annoyance, popping up alerts only when programs attempt to install software or alter your settings. If you want a higher level of security, you can open the UAC manager (in the control panel under Security) and raise the UAC to the maximum level, which is similar to Vista mode and will trigger an alert for pretty much anything. Alternately, you can disable notifications entirely by setting UAC to its lowest setting.

3. Restore Your Data

If you took our advice and started with a fresh hard drive, all you’ll have to do to restore your old data is connect your old HDD to a secondary SATA port and transfer over all your old files. Copy over all the important data we mentioned earlier, but be sure not to simply copy your old user profile directory over to your new one. Instead, fish out all the documents and media you need, remembering to collect important files from the hidden AppData folder, which usually includes your browser profiles and Outlook data.

Manually Change Windows XP Product Key After Install

There are various software applications available on the internet to change or update the Windows XP product key automatically. Since many users cannot completely rely on such software for this work they prefer to do it manually.

Modifying or changing the product key of Windows is a very rare practice after the installation process when the product gets activated. This is one reason why Microsoft did not produce a built-in mechanism to change and update the product key.

The grounds where we might require changing the product key of the installed version of Windows XP is when the product is illegal and pirated. At such a situation we have to go about the process manually to enter a genuine product key. This also carried out in large firms and organizations VLK (Volume License Key) or any product key that has been leaked to for activating all the computers.

The manual process does require re-installing the Windows XP, but you can go about a hacking mechanism to delete the existing product key and forcing the operating system to prompt you to enter a new product key to activate it.
The simple steps of the hacking mechanism are as follows. Go to Start and select Run. An open text box appears where you need to type ‘regedit’ and then click OK. This runs the Registry Editor Program. Here on the left pane follow the below path
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents
On the right pane locate OOBETimer. Right click on the OOBETimer and select Modify. In the Value Data change at least one digit in the value displayed which will deactivate Windows. Then click on start and click Run.

In the Open Box type the command ‘%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe/a’, and then click on OK. The Windows Product Activation window will appear where you need to select ‘Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows’. Click next to proceed. Then click on ‘Change the Product Key’ and type the new product key in the new key box. Click on Update button.
If you are taken to any previous window simply click on ‘Remind me later’ and restart you computer. Your Windows XP product key gets modified and activated. You should still make sure that the activation has been carried out correctly through Run.

The activation reminder for 30 days gets resolved after which you have to register and activate online.

PDF To Editable, Formatted Text Format, Notepad Converter

PDF or Portable Document Format is a file format that is extensively being used these days. There are many procedures to convert any file format into PDF file format. Some of the ways are by using office suite plug in, standalone applications, online services, web based tools, and many more.

The process of converting the file format is very simple, free and easy to follow. However, the main problem arises when we need to convert any file from the PDF file format to text format.
It is very difficult to get a suitable tool for this purpose. The solution that may strike you is rewriting the whole document again, but this is definitely a lengthy and useless process. A better way of doing this is by using the Easy PDF to Text Extractor application.

This is a free tool that can be easily downloaded and installed from the internet. This is ideal for those users who often need to convert documents from PDF to Text format. This is a very fast program and works by converting multiple PDF documents to the Text format at the same time. The output is, however, not completely accurate and the users have to spend some time doing manual corrections.

Another tool that can be used for the converting purpose is the PDF Undo tool. This can also be downloaded for free from the internet. It is very simple to use as the user just needs to upload the PDF file that they need to convert, convert it, and then download in a Word document the converted file. Here too the converted document is not completely correct and the corrections need to be done manually. This tool can also be used online, without having to download the desktop version.

Both these tools work well on all Windows operating systems.

How To Hide / Mask Text In Notepad With Hidden Stream

Whenever we type some data into our computer or create some new file, a default unnamed stream gets created to temporarily store the new data that is being written or the new file that is being created. This feature is available on all the operating systems of Windows 2000 and above. Alternate Data Streams allows the users to create additional stream for their text files.

All of the data stored in the additional stream created by the user will be hidden and not be visible to anyone opening or reading that particular file. This feature is highly helpful, especially when we want to hide some critical and sensitive information. This data is secure from all the other users.

Creating the hidden files for your data is pretty simple. Open the command prompt and select any directory where you would like to create your text file. Here type the text file naming it as MyFile.txt:StoreHiddenData and press enter. The ‘StoreHiddenData’ is the stream name and the MyFile.txt is the text file that you have created.
You will get a pop up message indicating that there is no such file available in that directory along with an option to create a new file by clicking OK. Click on OK to proceed. A notepad will come up spontaneously.

This is your hidden file. You can type anything here that you wish to stay hidden from others. Save the file after you finish typing.

This file is now secure and hidden on the system and the best thing is that it does not affect the size of the directory that it is stored in i.e. the size of the directory remains the same even after we type data into the hidden file and save it. You can view a delete all the hidden files from the command prompt. You may need to install the Streams Application (download link) before proceeding with the deletion.
